Seoul Station is the city’s main rail gateway, and the residential pockets around it, especially Huam-dong on the slopes of Namsan, are some of the most practical places to rent in Seoul for professionals who travel often. You can reach Incheon Airport by direct train, Busan by KTX, and the central business district in minutes, while still coming home to a quiet hillside street.
Why Diplomats and Expats Consider Seoul Station
For corporate assignees with regional responsibilities and for embassy staff who split their time between the office and official travel, few locations in Seoul save as much time. Seoul Station sits between the downtown core around City Hall and Gwanghwamun and the Yongsan district, so both government offices and the Itaewon–Hannam expat area are close.
- Airport access: the AREX Express runs non-stop from Seoul Station to Incheon International Airport, and travellers on some airlines can check in at the station before boarding.
- Domestic travel: KTX high-speed trains to Busan, Daegu and other regional cities depart from the same building.
- Central location: Namsan Park, Myeongdong and the City Hall offices are all within a short ride.
Housing Around Seoul Station
Huam-dong: Hillside Homes Below Namsan
Huam-dong rises from the station toward Namsan Park and is the area most expat families look at first. Housing is a mix of low-rise villas, renovated older houses and occasional detached homes with gardens or city views. Streets are steep in places, so it is worth checking the walk from the door to the nearest bus stop before signing a lease. The recently redeveloped Baekbeom Square park area sits between Huam-dong and Namsan.
Apartments and Officetels Near the Station
On the flatter ground around the station and toward its western side (Jungnim-dong and Mallijae-ro), newer high-rise apartments and officetels suit singles and couples who want doorstep rail access and building amenities such as concierge, parking and fitness rooms.
Getting Around
- Subway: Line 1, Line 4, AREX and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line all stop at Seoul Station.
- GTX-A: the GTX-A express section between Unjeong Jungang and Seoul Station opened in December 2024, giving fast connections to northwest Gyeonggi.
- Seoullo 7017: the elevated pedestrian park over the station tracks links the station area with Malli-dong and Jungnim-dong on foot.
International Schools Within Reach
Seoul Station does not have an international school on its doorstep, but its central position keeps several within a reasonable drive, including Yongsan International School of Seoul (YISS) and the Deutsche Schule Seoul International in Hannam. Families should compare school bus routes before choosing a street, as pick-up points change from year to year.
Daily Life and Landmarks
Namsan Park and the Seoul Tower Trails
Huam-dong residents have direct access to the Namsan walking trails, one of the reasons the area appeals to families and runners.
Shopping and Services
Lotte Outlets and Lotte Mart operate inside the station complex, and Namdaemun Market and the Myeongdong shopping streets are a short ride away.
Who Seoul Station Suits Best
- Professionals with frequent domestic or regional travel
- Embassy and government-affairs staff working around City Hall and Gwanghwamun
