Living in UN Village, Hannam-dong: A Guide for Diplomats and Expats

Key Rental Locations

26/01/06

UN Village is a quiet hillside enclave in Hannam-dong that slopes down toward the Han River. With detached houses, spacious villas and many ambassadors’ residences, it is one of the most established addresses for diplomats and senior executives who want to rent in Seoul in a private, residential setting.

Why Diplomats Choose UN Village

The neighborhood combines privacy with location. Streets are mostly residential and lightly trafficked, homes are generous by Seoul standards, and many have gardens, terraces and Han River views. At the same time, Itaewon, Hannam’s restaurant streets and the bridge to Gangnam are minutes away.

Housing in UN Village

Detached Houses and Residences

Detached homes with private gardens and parking are the signature property type here. Several are used as official residences, and they come to the rental market less often than apartments, so early planning helps.

Luxury Villas

Low-rise luxury villas of three to five bedrooms are more common and are popular with families. Look at the gradient of the access road, garage space and the view orientation, as these vary considerably from street to street.

Getting Around

  • Subway: Hannam Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line sits at the bottom of the hill, and Line 6 serves nearby Hangangjin and Itaewon.
  • By car: Hannam Bridge leads directly across the river to Sinsa and Apgujeong, and the Gangbyeon Expressway runs along the riverbank.
  • Most residents drive; walking routes up the hill are steep.

International Schools Nearby

UN Village is one of the closest residential areas to Yongsan International School of Seoul (YISS) and the Deutsche Schule Seoul International, both in Hannam-dong, which is a major reason families with school-age children choose it.

Daily Life and Landmarks

Leeum Museum of Art

The Leeum Museum of Art, home to one of Korea’s most important private collections, is a short drive up the hill toward Itaewon.

Han River Access

Riverside cycling and walking paths along the Han River are reachable from the lower streets of the village.

Hannam’s Restaurants and Boutiques

The cafés, galleries and fashion boutiques of Hannam-dong and Itaewon give the area an international character without the bustle of downtown.

Who UN Village Suits Best

  • Diplomats and heads of mission looking for a residence with entertaining space
  • Executives with families who want a house with a garden near YISS or the German School
  • Residents who value privacy and river views
